Hybrid Propulsion Gearboxes

Hybrid gearboxes are gearboxes with two power sources driving the gearbox, either separately, or in combination for a boost effect. Most will relate hybrid gearboxes to having two “equal” drive shafts, i.e. for two different power sources.

A variation to this is a more traditional gearbox, with one main shaft, but with a Power-Take-In (PTI). E.g. an electric motor can then be fitted at the same location as a PTO, working as a second power source.

With a combined electric motor/generator, a PTI/PTO can be arranged, allowing the electric unit to change modes between driving (the gearbox) as an electric motor (PTO), or being driven (by the gearbox), as a generator (PTO). The latter can e.g. be used to charge a battery pack.

From the gearbox point of view, the two power sources can be any type of similar or different power source, e.g. diesel engine + electric motor, diesel engine + diesel engine, etc.

The main application for hybrid gearboxes are propulsion lines, having great fuel saving potential, resulting in an great environmental advantages, as well as savings in operational cost.

Kumera is your partner in developing a hybrid propulsion line, adapted to the vessel’s specific operational profile.

Kumera - Angle Gearboxes

Bevel gearboxes can be used for a range of different applications, and traditionally most bevel gearboxes delivered by Kumera have been utilized for bow thruster applications.

Another typical application for Kumera gearboxes has been fire pump drives for offshore firefighting system, requiring high water volumes and securing trouble free operation in case of a fire.

Kumera has also developed and delivered bevel gearboxes for main propulsion purposes, e.g. for a series of SWATH vessels, and more traditional displacement vessels.

Service and Original Spare Parts – Kumera Gearboxes

Kumera gearboxes are sturdy high-quality products built to operate flawlessly for decades when maintained properly. Many Kumera gearboxes delivered in the 1960s and 1970s are still in operation today.

As the authorised service partner for Kumera in the region, Drive Line Middle East offers comprehensive maintenance and service support for Kumera marine gearboxes and propeller systems.

Maintenance requirements for a Kumera gearbox are limited and simple, even when exposed to high loads in hostile environments. In the shorter term, key areas to maintain are oil quality and seals and gaskets. After five to ten years of operation, larger components such as bearings and clutches should be considered for maintenance.

Kumera tracks all gearboxes by serial number and IMO number, and all gearboxes maintained through our service will have their maintenance histories logged in the Kumera system.

Our Services Include

  • Service contracts
  • Condition analysis, monitoring and preventive maintenance through endoscopy, vibration analysis and thermography
  • Overhauls
  • Modernisations and replacements
  • Assembly of gear services
  • Training
  • Consulting services

Our team is ready to support you with original spare parts, engineering skills and technical advice, backed by Kumera's world-wide service network and air-freight capability to ensure fast deliveries to any location.

In the marine industry, performance is rarely determined by a single component. A vessel's efficiency depends on how every element of the propulsion system works together—from the gearbox and propeller to the control system and power transmission architecture.

That's why shipbuilders, vessel operators, and marine engineers searching for Kumera Marine in Dubai, UAE, Saudi Arabia, KSA, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait often look beyond individual products. They need complete propulsion solutions that improve performance, reduce fuel consumption, and ensure long-term reliability. Kumera Marine specializes in exactly that by combining advanced marine gearboxes, controllable pitch propellers, hybrid propulsion systems, and custom-engineered driveline solutions.

From Engine Power to Vessel Performance

Many marine propulsion systems focus on generating power.

Kumera focuses on how that power is transferred, controlled, and optimized.

A well-designed propulsion system should:

  • Deliver maximum thrust with minimum energy loss
